Alpine Village

Here is a picture of our Alpine Village as I promised. This picture includes the cobblestones I carved into the insulation foam board base with the hot knife. I painted all of the cobblestones tan and after the tan dried, went back and painted at random some green, cranberry and dark brown. After all the paint was dry, I liberally sprinkled on sand for the grout and then used hair spray (Aqua Net Super Hold Hair Spray works great) to hold the sand in place. John and I both worked on the mountains. The back drop mountains are cut diamond shaped at the top on a long piece of insulation board. We spray painted two and three colors while still wet but kept the tops white for snow peaks. We also added diamond dust to the wet paint for an icy sparkle. We did not have much space so I think we only used 3/4 inch Styrofoam for the backdrop mountains. The hill for the Sound of Music and the mountain next to it are several layers of 2 inch Styrofoam. For the Sound of Music, we painted the flat top surface green and then sprinkled on turf grass before adding some snow. You can click on the picture to resize it larger to see the detail close-up. I will also send you two more picture of the our Alpine display--the middle with the large mountain and steps and the end that has the ski resort with working cable cars. None of our "mountains" or back drops would be so easy to do without hot wire tools. Thank you for making them! Let me know what you think of our work since I am sure you have seen the work of professionals with the tools. Pat
