Three (3) sheets of 2 x 24 x 24-inch smooth, rigid white expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam for big projects. EPS foam is easy to work with and perfect for use with Hot Wire tools. Great for sculptures, craft projects and more! Rated 1 PCF (pound per cubic foot). Shipping foam is outrageously expensive - try to buy it locally. Please note that foam is shipped in a separate box from other items you order because this is the maximum box size that will ship in this weight category without high oversize box penalty charges. Shipping foam is expensive because postage is calculated based on volume, not just weight. You can usually find sheets of polystyrene foam in the insulation section of your local hardware or building supply store. If you need to laminate sheets together, we recommend using our Foam Fusion glue. If there is a silver Mylar coating it will have to be removed before gluing. If you need help sourcing large quantities of foam in your area, please give us a call at (866) 735-9255. |
Why is the shipping so expensive?
Hi Beverly,
We only charge what Fedex or USPS charges us for shipping. They are all now charging by volume and the rates have become ridiculously high. The rates are not too bad if you are out west, but shipping across the country is pricey.
You should be able to find 4ft x 8ft sheets of 2-inch thick EPS foam in the insulation section of your local hardware store. You might have to remove the Mylar coating, but then you can slice it up and glue the pieces into a block. Many foam artists have found that it is easier to carve the outline shape on each slice, then glue them together. Our tools cut through all three of our foam-safe glues. Try to keep the glue away from any edges that will be sanded to avoid a ridge line.
Let us know if you have any foam carving, gluing, or coating questions.
What is the compression or weight capacity of this foam?
Our 1 pound EPS foam has a compressive strength of about 10psi.
Trying to cut letters out of 10 inch thick foam board, want to make one clean cut. Do you have the tools for this project?
Hi Aminah,
You can make large letters using one of our Bow Cutters. I think you could get away with our Pro 2-Foot Bow. It's only $150-170 depending on the power supply you choose.
Most people use a cardboard template of the letters on both sides of the foam. Cut just inside the template on your first cuts, then do your final fine cut dragging the hot wire along the edge of the template. The hot wire will not burn the cardboard but if you have the heat turned up the wire will leave little dimples wherever you stall during the cut, and the wire tends to catch on these when you reuse your template. Masonite is more heat resistant, but cutting templates out of this material is a lot of work.
When you need to cut an internal shape, like the middle of an 'O' you should cut a squiggly line. Straight lines are more visible. Also, don't make your exit cut straight across from your entry cut.
If you are going to be making a lot of letters, logos, etc. then you might want to invest in one of our Industrial Scroll Tables.
Our Deluxe 3D Table is good for letters up to 10 inches thick and about 18 inches tall. You can do taller letters, but you will have to approach them from several angles and might have to make some preliminary cuts to get rid of some of the excess foam.
When you are ready to do this kind of cutting commercially, consider getting our Sign Maker CNC Machine. It's easy to use and your cuts will be perfect.
