Great little tool. Had a malfunction with the original one that was sent and notified the company. They responded quickly to my concern and sent a replacement free of charge. Very pleased with their customer service.
I had high hopes to use this for my model railroading but am not as happy as I thought I would be. I find it difficult to set up the wire exactly perpendicular in both directions, and the fence keeps moving no matter how tight I turn the nuts. Messed up several pieces of foam, alas, and am falling back on my old system of using a heavy ruler and handheld wire cutter from Woodland Scenics :-(
This hot knife will cut XPS foam, but I probably selected the wrong tool for my application, and may have been better off with the shorter version. At the start of my project, I wasn't sure the maximum cut depth I would need. While cutting 1" or 2" deep, I found this knife to cut quite slowly, and this made it difficult to make freehand cuts accurately. I had the best results when following a metal guide for the rectangular cut. One trick I found was to loop the power cable behind my neck, this kept the power wires away from the blade.
